It will be a home away from home for families of patients at the Jefferson Barracks Veterans Administration Hospital.
Construction is underway for the Fisher House in South St. Louis County. It will provide accommodations for veterans and their families while the vet is being treated at the hospital. Project officials say families are often in financial crisis when they have to care for an ailing vet.
"We've had wives that live in their vans and cars in the parking lot whole families that camp out in the hospital lobbies and waiting rooms, but there is something actually worse. We have veterans that will not come here for the care they need, is available and we want to provide because their families can not come with them because they can not afford commercial lodging for any period." The Fisher House will accommodate 40 guests. Construction is expected to be completed next year.
