An employee inside the gym witnessed the crime and called police once he realized it was more than an argument. Three men in a silver sedan pulled up quickly as the woman parked her 2006 Nissan Altima. One man approached the victim from behind, displayed a gun and demanded her car keys. She gave them up and got inside the gym safely as the thief drove away in her car.
"It's definitely a concern of ours at the police department," said Shrewsbury Police Lt. Jeff Beaton. "We pride ourselves as being a pretty secure community and we'd like to keep it that way," he added promising increased police patrols in Kenrick Plaza.
Powerhouse Gym general manager Roger Semsch said Friday there were no surveillance cameras on the parking lot, but it was well lighted. "The police are always circling the parking lot, circling the area and I would be very surprised if it was anyone from this area," Semsch said. Cameras may be added by the landlord following this carjacking.
Shrewsbury police recommend that people check their surroundings before leaving their vehicles. If anything looks or feels suspicious, "drive on or maybe circle the lot to see if everything is secure," Beaton said.
Police describe the suspect with the gun as an African American male wearing a red, hooded sweatshirt and baggy pants. The stolen Nissan Altima is pewter colored and carries a Missouri license plate "FC6-E5C."
