Soon drunk drivers in Missouri will have no choice but to sober up before getting behind the wheel. Starting July 1st drivers with more than one alcohol offense will have to install an ignition interlock device in order to start their vehicle.

Gabrielle Millenbruck has an interlock device on her car for demonstration purposes only. She is the manager of Interlock of St. Louis. A company that provides interlock devices to those convicted of DWI. There are over 38,000 DWI offenders in Missouri who recently received a special notification to install the device in their car.

"If you've got two or more DWI's in the state of Missouri and you are under a suspension or revocation of drivers license come July first 2009 you are required to have an interlock installed." Gabrielle Millenbruck - Interlock of St. Louis

The devices also require random tests while driving. If the driver fails then their horn will go off and blare steady until they pull over to a safe spot and turn their vehicle off.

What prevents another person from blowing in the device?

"There are built in features of the device that we dont discuss because its part of the monitoring program that does detect what's going on if they are trying to circumvent the device in anyway." Gabrielle Millenbruck

Interlock of St. Louis says the devices have proven to be effective in reducing recidivism by 65%.

Interlock of St. Louis is gearing up for an increase in business after the law goes into effect July 1st. The company charges a $69 monthly fee to clients for monitoring the device. How long the offender has the device is up to the courts. It could be years.
