Rashud Wilson, a sophomore at East St. Louis High School, was hanging out with friends at 45th and Audubon, near his cousins' house around nine o'clock Halloween night.
Wilson's cousin, Zachary Gossett says, "I turn around, I hear gunshots. I see Rashud fall to the ground. I run into the house and tell my Uncle Damion that Rashud just got shot. We all run back and we see him laid out."
Wilson's mother says she's been told the shooting may have been accident. Other witnesses say it was far from that: the gunman, a friend of Wilson's, firing at Wilson and missing multiple times during an argument, before hitting him with the fatal shot.
"The kid that shot him was one of their friends; a kid that hangs with them every day. It's ridiculous. It doesn't make any sense at all," says Gossett.
Wilson's mother, Candice Wilson, says, "I really just hate that his life has been shortened. He didn't get the chance to finish school and grow up to see what else was out here in life for him."
East St. Louis police have the accused killer in custody. He is 15 years old, too. At least initially, they arrested his mother for allegedly trying to hide the young man. Charges in the case are pending.
