The one victim of the fire, a 20-year old woman who lived in the rented home, was in critical condition at St. John's Mercy Health Center Wednesday. She called 9-1-1 for help 7p.m. Tuesday night. Boles Fire District Chief Jim Casey reached the home on Fiddle Creek Rd. first. He found the woman outside the house with severe burns to her face and arms. Chief Casey said the woman told his dispatcher the house blew up, she had been burned and needed assistance.
Thirty firefighters from four area departments fought the blaze. They had to string 1500 feet of hose up a steep hill and then walk up to the fire scene since regular fire trucks were too large to navigate the narrow driveway. Crews brought water tankers to the foot of the hill and pumped the water up to the fire. But despite their efforts, the building burned to the ground. Only the fireplace, chimney and a concrete wall remained standing.
Federal agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobbaco and Firearms assisted in the investigation.
