While the heat is hard on old roads it's causing problems for crews building new ones. Workers on the Highway 40 construction project are adding ice cubes to the concrete mix. The mixture cannot be too warm when they use it to pave a bridge deck or road surface.
Dan Galvin of Gateway Constructors says if the concrete is not cool enough problems will result in the new highway, "If the temperature conditions aren't right the concrete starts to crack it starts curing too quickly and it won't be accessible."
He also says they are paving in the overnight hours when it's a little bit cooler outside.
An excessive heat warning remains in effect for the area into Saturday night.
