Chris Regnier's original report:
Call it a heartless crime against the most worthy of causes. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department is searching for two suspects accused of stealing a gift basket meant to raise money to fight breast cancer. The gift basket was in the High Ridge Schnucks. It was to be raffled off with the proceeds benefiting the St. Louis affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.
A woman was caught on surveillance video early Sunday morning stealing the gift basket that was to be raffled off in the fundraising effort. Schnucks manager Dave Greeley says his employees stocked the basket with items they bought themselves, "We had a lot of people here who have been touched by breast cancer and this is an important item to them and you know a very real cause for them and they were just very disappointed and hurt that someone would do this to them on their project."
Investigators say the woman was with a man. They had a baby carrier with them. Police say they bought some merchandise, then helped themselves to the gift basket on the way out.
Lieutenant Kevin Carle with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department explained, "The man was purchasing some items and the woman was looking at the basket and then as the man was exiting the store, the woman picked up the basket and left."
Customers couldn't believe someone would steal something like a gift basket meant to help fight cancer.
"It stinks and that I'm sorry that somebody was so desperate that they had to do that," said Paula Fielder.
High Ridge resident Marilyn Mays told us, "It's horrifying that somebody would steal from people that are willing to give to people." Mays has had family members die of breast cancer. She was so upset after we told her what happened that she and her sister, Moletta Storey, came in with a new basket that already had some items in it.
The goal raise more money with a better basket and catch the suspects. "I hope they do catch who did this. I really do," said Storey.
Greeley says one of his employees has already spent $80 to help buy replacement items.
