PEVELY, MO (KPLR) - Two students at one Jefferson County school are in the battle of a lifetime. They have leukemia and their classmates are now raising money to help in the fight. For the past three weeks, students at Pevely Elementary have been working hard collecting pennies, nickels, and dimes. They gladly accepted any amount that anyone was willing to give. It was all in the name of their classmates Robby Chandler and Nancy Melker who are both fighting a courageous battle against leukemia.

Robby's mom, Jamie Chandler, says, "There were so many points in our life that we didn't know we'd make it this far. So to have this kind of support is absolutely amazing."

"This is really exciting. It's all about the kids. We've got two at this school that are in need," says Gary Melker, Nancy's grandfather.

To meet that need, students set a lofty goal: raise $1000 dollars in just three weeks. If they met that goal principle Sheri Lindquist would be duck taped to the wall and assistant principal Debbie Kllingsworth would have her hair painted. The grand total: $2,121.10. So on Monday, the principal and assistant principal faced their fate.

The group that collected the most money gets an all expenses paid pasta party at the Olive Garden. The winner was Mrs. Monarch's Kindergarten class.

But the real winners are Nancy and Robby who both have big hearts warmed by the compassion of their carrying classmates. All the money raised stays right here in St. Louis and supports local research and patient aid programs.
