ST. LOUIS RIVERFRONT ( KPLR ) - An irate tourist from Florida is blasting St. Louis via e-mail for what he says is poor security on the city's riverfront. Norman Black of Ormond Beach, FL had a rental SUV broken into on October 19 while it was parked on the levee beneath the Gateway Arch.

Family pictures taken from the Arch happened to show a pickup truck parked suspiciously close to their rental van. When the family returned from visiting the Arch and museum they discovered the SUV had been broken into and visible luggage and valuables stolen. Black complained St. Louis police were unsympathetic and told him it was unlikely he would get his family's belongs returned.

"They are tough on security at the Arch," Black said but he thinks terrorists could easily launch an attack from the levee parking area. ''I understand you can't cover everything in the city ..but a national monument..I just don't understand that," he added.

There are no warning signs along the levee about parking and no surveillance cameras. But that will soon change according to Nick Nichols of the St. Louis City Port Authority. Surveillance cameras will be installed along the Riverfront by the end of the year.

Jack Pohrer, chairman of St.Louis Parking Company, said 14 more surveillance cameras will be installed along downtown streets and will be monitored with help from the Community Improvement District. CID provided bike patrols and funds to beautify downtown.
