EAST ST. LOUIS, IL ( KPLR ) - A security guard -- shot and killed, inside a Schnucks grocery store. It happened in East St. Louis. A suspected shoplifter allegedly used the guard's own gun -- to kill him.

The suspect is in custody - and the security guard is dead, police say he was shot with his own gun. it happened inside this store - in a back room. According to Schnucks…the suspect was allegedly shoplifting…the guard trying to detain him.

It was around 2:20 this afternoon. The Schnucks was open - there were shoppers and workers inside. Illinois State police say some employees were trying to stop this alleged shoplifter…the security guard, who was armed - stepped in. The suspect, a man, was in a back room of the store, when he allegedly got security guard's gun away from him…shot him, and killed him.

"The suspect fled the scene - was later apprehended - he's in custody, at this time. We're still in the process of interviewing witnesses, and people from inside the store - still very early on in the investigation, that's the basics that we know at this time." Jim Morrisey - Illinois State Police

The security guard was *not* a Schnucks employee - he worked for Hamilton Security a private contractor. His identity is not being released…neither is the suspect's.

Family and friends are remembering Wayne Groom. He's the Schnucks security guard who was shot and killed Tuesday while on duty. Investigators say a shoplifting suspect took groom's gun and killed him.

The suspect is in custody but no charges have been filed yet.
