The St. Louis Aces season this week. But the competition is already in full swing in their front office. The interns are using their "hunger" as motivation to sell tickets.
The contest is called "Feed the Interns". Whichever intern sells the most tickets before opening night will win some prize money for their pocket. Money these unpaid interns would love to have. But not as much as bragging rights.
Aces General Manager Dani Apted would first like everyone to know that the "Feed the Interns" contest name is just an expression.
"I want to clear that up, first of all, I feed the interns. I give them lunch. But you know, they're not paid internships, anywhere, right now. So, most interns are struggling and could use a little extra cash, and that's the biggest motivator." Dani Apted - Aces General Manager
Round one of the competition, a day off and some prize money went to intern Lexis. The winner of round two gets an even bigger cash prize and ultimate bragging rights.
"First of all, I know I'm gonna win. That's a given. It's gonna happen this time around. I'm still real angry about not winning the first round. It's gonna happen this time. Almost anything you need from me, I'll do it to get you to an Aces match and win this competition." Kerry Conaty - Aces Intern
Not so fast, Kerry, fellow intern Erica might have something to say about that.
"I'm a really competitive person. I think I did pretty well for the time that I had, I think I managed it really well, but I'm definitely gonna try a lot harder this time." Erica Clark - Aces Intern
Second year intern Stefanie took the first round loss personally.
"I thought I was a little bit of a veteran, but somebody beat me out. I'm a little mad. But now I got this green shirt on. No one can miss me now, I'm gonna hunt people down. There gonna buy some tickets. It's gonna be great." Stefanie Hefner - Aces Intern
But the one with the most competitive spirit is not even an intern.
"I work for Dani full time. It didn't go so hot, so hopefully round two is better. I've worked for the Aces for three years now. I know where all the good seats are and I know all the tricks of Metro Tix, so give me a call and I'll set you up with some good seats." Barbie Ricken - St. Louis Aces Tix & Sales
The first round of the contest did well, selling over a 115 tickets. Dani Apted said selling another 100 in round two would be huge for the franchise, whose first match is July 2nd.
