ST. LOUIS (AP) — The bank robber known as the "Boonie Hat Bandit" has admitted robbing 12 St. Louis-area banks. Donald Giammanco of Florissant pleaded guilty Friday in U.S. District Court. He could get up to 20 years in prison on each of the 12 counts at sentencing on Aug. 13.

Acting U.S. Attorney Michael Reap says Giammanco made off with amounts ranging from $1,300 at one bank to $26,000 at another. Seven of the robberies were in St. Louis County, five in St. Charles County.

Giammanco earned the nickname because he twice wore military-style, floppy-brimmed "Boonie" hats during robberies. Other times, he wore suit jackets or other nice clothing.

After his capture in September, authorities described the 45-year-old Giammanco as an out-of-work construction worker.
