ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI - FOX2now.com) - Catholic protesters gathered in the Central West End Sunday afternoon. They're opposing a donation by the St. Louis Archdiocese to support an anti-gay marriage ballot measure in Maine. The signs expressed the disappointment with the St. Louis Archbishop Robert Carlson's decision. Protestors demonstrating in front of the Cathedral Basilica disagree with his decision to donate $10,000 from a special church fund to support to anti gay marriage ballot measure in Maine.

Archbishop Carlson and 45 catholic bishops across the United States together contributed a total of $180,000 to Maine's "Yes on 1" campaign. That was a ballot measure to overturn the governor's and the general assembly's legislation allowing gay marriages. St. Louis protestors didn't like money here spent on the Maine effort.

Archbishop Carlson said in a statement Sunday: "I approved a donation for $10,000 which was charged to the special needs fund. This fund has traditionally been the archbishop's for discretionary spending. The voters in Maine supported this measure despite the fact that groups who believe in same sex marriage raised more than $5.2 million to defeat the amendment while those who believe in the sanctity of marriage raised about $3.3 million."
