Two people are dead following a chain reaction crash on Interstate 70 near Highland, Illinois. It happened around 7 a.m. Monday morning between mile markers 27 and 29. Jerald D. Jaynes and William T. Burleson were both killed in the accident. They were were inside a tractor trailer that caught fire during the impact. The accident happened after another accident began to slow on I-70. Police say three semi tractor trailer trucks and a pick up truck were involved.

The first accident happened just 10 minutes before when a trailer lost its load. The cab and the trailer separated on the highway. That driver was taken to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Another accident was later reported in the eastbound lanes of I-70. This time it involved a tractor trailer and a motorcycle. Traffic was being diverted off of westbound I-70 when the crash occurred. ISP says the motorcycle crashed into the back of the truck. There are minor injuries reported in that crash.

Interstate 70 westbound heading towards St. Louis has reopened. It was shut down for several hours on Monday.
